Position : Paediatric Ophthalmology Specialist
Location : Surabaya – East Java
Duration & Term : 24 months, full time

Reports to : REPO Program Field Coordinator

BENEFIT PACKAGE:
· Full covered max. 1 (one) year fellowship program on the topic of
Paediatric Ophthalmology at the Eye Centre in Indonesia.
· Stipend for 2 (two) years program.

SUMMARY OF PROGRAM:
Helen Keller International – Indonesia (HKI-I) in collaboration with the East
Java Provincial Departments of Education and the Provincial Department of Health
are implementing a comprehensive eye health care system in order to improve the
vision of children in East Java Province.

Within REPO Program (Refractive Error and Paediatric Ophthalmology Program), we
plan to establishing a sustainable system for school-based vision screening and
the provision of free eyeglasses, developing eye health screening and referral
capacity within health clinics serving the poor, strengthening the referral
system for paediatric patients identified from target schools and community
clinics; and improving the capacity of eye health professionals in East Java to
provide high quality secondary and tertiary paediatric ophthalmic care.

The paediatric ophthalmology unit will be installed at BKMM (Balai Kesehatan
Mata Masyarakat /Community Eye Health Centre) Surabaya. As the referral central
of eye health from the districts and lower levels of health centres in the
community, it is very crucial to have a comprehensive eye health services in
this Centre include the referral for children.
In collaboration with Eye Centre in India, HKI will facilitate the establishing
of Paediatric Ophthalmology Unit (PO Unit) as well as the link with other
resources in the province and national level.

The services will be provided for in-patient, out-patient, and the patients
identified from the community outreach activities.

SUPERVISION:
Paediatric Ophthalmology Specialist will be structurally under supervision of
REPO Program Field Coordinator of HKI Indonesia and Head of Medical Services of
BKMM Surabaya. She/he will be directly supervising the nurses and refractionists
in the PO Unit.

GENERAL TASKS:
Paediatric Ophthalmology Specialist is responsible for the day to day practical
activities in the PO Unit. She/he also has to provide the technical supports in
the topic of general eye health and paediatric ophthalmology topics if needed.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
a) Responsible for implementing the day to day activities of the Unit
(in-patient, out-patients and the community outreach activities).

b) Supervise the ophthalmic nurses for the Unit.
c) Provide technical supports in area of general eye health and paediatric
ophthalmology topics for the program.
d) Coach the residents and refraction academy students on the practical
activities in the Unit.

f) Update the data and any necessary information.
g) Provide regular report as planned in the time plan to the supervisors.
h) Perform all the duties related to the PO Unit assigned to and report it
the supervisors.

i) Progress all other work that may reasonably be requested by Helen
Keller International and BKMM Surabaya from time to time in line with the
objectives of the job description.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

· Ophthalmologist (Eye Specialist) / Paediatric Ophthalmologist, degree
from qualified university.
· Female/Male, 25 – 40 years old
· At least 1 year experiences the practical in the clinic, hospital or
community centres include the surgeries.

· Experience in the vision camp at the communities.
· Knowledge about the public health services system in Indonesia is a
plus.
· Civil servant is a plus.
· Written and oral English is a plus.
· Fully computer literate.
· Patience and kid-friendly approach skills.
· Communicative and interpersonal skills.
· Strong leadership skills.
· Efficiency, flexibility, drive for results, respect for diversity,
creative thinking, and punctual.
· Understanding the socio-economic and cultural environments and impacts
of eye health program.
